Chapter 11
The man's gaze flickered between Anna and the two women, the chains rattling softly as he shifted. His mouth opened, perhaps to protest or plead, but no words came out, only a breathy gasp that spoke volumes of the night's indulgences.
One of the women stepped forward, defiance rising in her stance. "We don't talk to strangers," she snapped, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"Then it's a good thing I'm not here to make friends," Anna replied coolly. She moved closer, each step measured and deliberate, her training honing her senses to any sudden movements. "I just need a moment of your time."
The women exchanged a glance, a silent communication passing between them. It was clear they were weighing their options, deciding whether to scream for help or deal with this unexpected interloper themselves.
"Time is something you might be running out of," Anna added, letting the implication hang heavy in the air.
The two women, scantily clad, were in the midst of dressing now, throwing on their clothing. The garish neon from The Strip spilled through the half-open curtains, casting an unforgiving glow on their hasty movements.
Anna's hand shot out, clutching a crumpled wad of bills. She thrust it toward the women. "A Benjamin," she said, her voice taut with urgency. "Just tell me what you know about Abdo Sahid."
The women both stiffened at the name, as if sheâd uttered an expletive. They cast quick glances towards one another.
The nearest prostitute, hair tumbling in a golden cascade over her scantily clad shoulders, let out a derisive snort as she eyed the money. "Honey, we make that tenfold in an hour on a slow night," she said, her lips curling into a sneer. Her companion, still pulling on her thigh-high boots, gave a sharp nod of agreement, her gaze never leaving Anna's.
"Please." Anna's plea sliced through the tension, and she stepped back to press her frame against the door, effectively sealing their only exit. More flies were caught with honey, and these two women werenât the sort of threat she could deal with the usual way. "It's not just about the money. This is important."
The desperation in her voice was raw, unmasked; it was the sound of someone who had too much at stake to walk away empty-handed. Anna watched them, saw the wariness flicker in their eyes. The name Abdo Sahid was a shackle they all wore, whether they liked it or not.
Anna's jaw clenched, the muscle flexing with the effort to keep her composure. Images of Fatima's face, younger and innocent, flashed before her eyesâthe same eyes that had looked up at her before the explosion. The ache of loss twisted inside her like a knife, but she pushed it down, deep into the pit of her stomach where all her darkest memories lay. All the people sheâd failed⦠all the souls sheâd taken.
"Look," Anna started again, voice steeling as she watched the two women sidle toward the exit, their movements a delicate dance of fear and determination, "I understand you're scared, but if Sahid is here, I need to know where he is.
